Cold Weather Care for Outdoor Rabbits

Pet rabbits in the snow

When temperatures drop, outdoor rabbits require extra care to stay healthy and comfortable throughout the winter months. With proper housing, nutrition, and daily monitoring, your rabbits can thrive, even in cold weather conditions.

How Rabbits Handle the Cold

Rabbits are surprisingly well-adapted to cold temperatures. Their dense fur coat provides excellent insulation, and many breeds can tolerate freezing conditions better than extreme heat. However, rabbits still face challenges during winter. Temperature fluctuations and moisture in their environment can cause stress, which can exacerbate underlying health conditions. Dampness, drafts, and wind chill pose greater threats than cold temperatures alone, making proper shelter essential for their well-being. Keeping thawed water in front of your rabbit is also very important in preventing dehydration and added stress. Let’s learn more about winter care for rabbits

Preparing the Hutch for Winter

  • Insulate without blocking ventilation

Add extra bedding materials, such as straw or hay, to provide insulation while maintaining adequate airflow. Avoid completely sealing the hutch, as proper ventilation prevents respiratory issues.

  • Protect against wind and moisture

Position the hutch away from prevailing winds and ensure it has a waterproof roof. Cover the wire sides with tarps, wood, or tin, leaving ventilation openings to prevent drafts while allowing for moisture to escape. Make sure that your rabbit cannot reach the material you use for wind blocks, as they will likely chew them.

  • Provide a warm retreat

Create a solid-sided nest box filled with generous amounts of straw or hay where rabbits can burrow and retain body heat during the coldest periods.

  • Elevate the hutch

Keep the hutch off the ground to prevent moisture absorption from snow and frozen ground, and to improve insulation from below.

  • Check for damage

Inspect the hutch regularly for cracks, gaps, or damage that could allow wind, rain, snow, or predators to enter. Make repairs promptly to maintain a dry, draft-free environment.

Keep Water from Freezing

  • Check the water multiple times daily

Water bottles and bowls can freeze quickly in winter. Check at least twice daily and replace with fresh, unfrozen water as needed.

  • Use heated water bottles or bowls

Consider investing in heated water bottles or thermal bowls specifically designed for outdoor use to maintain a liquid water supply throughout the day.

  • Provide warm water

Offering warm (not hot!) water encourages rabbits to drink more, helping them stay hydrated during cold weather when water consumption often decreases.

Feeding Rabbits Through Winter

  • Increase food portions

Rabbits burn more calories to maintain body temperature in cold weather. Gradually increase their feed portions to help them maintain proper body condition throughout winter.

  • Offer quality pellets

Provide a complete fortified pellet feed that meets all nutritional requirements. Kalmbach Feeds offers corn-free rabbit feeds formulated to exceed the National Research Council’s minimum vitamin and mineral requirements, ensuring optimal health and performance.

  • Provide unlimited hay

Forage is essential for digestive health. While pelleted feeds also provide forage components and fiber, adding hay and straw in the winter can provide both insulation and an additional fiber source. The act of digesting fiber generates internal heat, helping rabbits stay warm.

  • Make feed changes gradually

If adjusting your rabbit’s diet for winter, make all feed changes slowly over a period of 5-10 days to prevent digestive upset.

  • Maintain consistent nutrition

Choose feeds with fixed formulations, where ingredients remain consistent from week to week, ensuring your rabbits receive the nutrition they can depend on.

Monitoring Health and Behavior

Watch your rabbits closely during the winter months for signs of cold stress or illness. Look for changes in eating and drinking habits, as decreased consumption can be a sign of problems. Monitor their activity levels. Healthy rabbits should remain active even in cold weather. Handle your rabbits regularly and check for signs of frostbite on ears, feet, and tails, especially after extreme cold snaps. Listen carefully for respiratory changes - like coughs and sneezes - to catch early signs of illness.

Keep manure cleaned up regularly and disinfect pens, food bowls, and water bottles intermittently to help keep bacteria at bay and prevent the spread of viruses. Maintaining good hygiene becomes even more critical when rabbits spend more time in enclosed spaces during winter.

A Sycamore, Ohio native, Hattie Hartschuh grew up only 25 minutes north of Kalmbach Feeds on her family's farm. Over the years, she and her family have raised cattle, sheep, horses, goats, pigs, rabbits and chickens. Growing up on the farm also gave her the opportunity to show multiple species through 4-H and FFA. She pursued both her B.S. and her M.S. in Animal Science at Kansas State University, where she specialized in Ruminant Nutrition. Hattie joined the Kalmbach Feeds team in January of 2015 and thoroughly enjoys helping customers and dealers provide the best possible nutrition to their herds.
