Rabbit Food FAQs

Raising rabbits can be such a fun venture. Whether you are raising them for meat, show, or just as pets, they are relatively low input animals. If you are new to the rabbit industry or trying to choose your first Kalmbach® product, there are probably many questions on your mind. Here are some of the frequently asked questions about rabbits that might be able to help you decide what to feed your furry friends.

Complete feeds are designed to meet the total nutrient requirements for the species they are labeled for. All of our rabbit feeds can be fed as the sole ration to your rabbits and should make up at least 80% of their total diet. There is no nutritional need to feed anything else.

If choosing to supplement your rabbits with hay, a good grass hay is always best. Timothy and orchard grass are excellent options. Legumes, such as alfalfa, can provide more energy and calcium than what your rabbits require.

With all of the different feed options available, it can be difficult to choose the best option for your buns. We offer some premium products (18% Best-in-Show & 16% Best-in-Show) for those who show rabbits or want a product that contains our Lifeguard® technology. We also offer a full line of economy feeds that provide the same golden standard of nutrition, but with fewer bells and whistles and at a lower price point. Most rabbits will do well on a moderate level of protein – either 15% or 16%. For larger breeds, growing kits, and lactating does, an 18% is a better option. We strive to offer products that will best fit the needs of both your rabbits and your budget.

LifeGuard® is a proprietary blend of prebiotics, probiotics, and enzymes specifically designed to support digestive health and immune function in your rabbits.

If stored properly, your Kalmbach® rabbit feed should be good to feed to your buns for up to 6 months. You should make sure to store your rabbit feed at room temperature, off the ground, in a closed container, where it is not accessible to rodents.

We have a lot of great articles in our “Learn More About” section of our website. Check out this article for more information about getting your rabbits show ring ready!

Both of our Best-in-Show rabbit feeds contain a blend of Timothy and Alfalfa hay.

You can purchase Kalmbach® rabbit feed from your local Kalmbach® dealer. If you go to the “Where to Buy” tab at the top of our website, you can plug in your zip code and find your local Kalmbach dealer. If you don’t have a dealer close to your location, we also sell many of our products on Amazon.com and Chewy.com. When you click on a product you are interested in, there will be a “Buy Online” option for those products that are available online.

Switching from one feed to another can be stressful to any animal. Rabbits are no exception. Make sure to make any dietary changes gradually over the course of 7-10 days. Slowly begin mixing the new feed in with the old feed and then phase out the old feed. It isn’t a bad idea to provide a little bit of hay during this period to help maintain consistency through the change.
